ØyVAR – First in Norway

ØyVAR is the first in Norway to test a new drinking water treatment method designed to deliver even safer and more consistent water quality. The innovative technology is being piloted at one of the facilities in Øygarden, with the aim of reducing unwanted substances and enhancing the taste of the water.

The project is being implemented in close collaboration with Optiva, a specialist in water treatment, water supply, and wastewater management, and Nanostone Water, a supplier of ceramic membrane filters. The initiative is supported by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI).

Ceramic Membranes for Safer Drinking Water

Ceramic membranes are a modern and advanced drinking water treatment technology that enables highly efficient filtration of particles, bacteria, and other unwanted substances. The membranes are made from durable ceramic materials with microscopic pores that allow water to pass through while retaining contaminants.

The technology provides stable, high treatment performance even when the quality of the raw water varies, and it tolerates both high pressure and frequent cleaning. This makes ceramic membranes particularly well suited to Norwegian conditions, where source water quality can change rapidly throughout the year.

Ceramic membrane systems can help ensure safer drinking water, more predictable operations, and a reduced need for chemicals in water treatment. The solution represents an important step toward more modern, sustainable, and future‑oriented waterworks.
